Gaining Confidence and Strength (MH Lesson)
People struggling with anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders frequently complain about feeling helpless. They can point to a series of circumstances over which they had no contro,l including job loss, abuse, marital conflict, death of a loved one, infidelity, divorce, serious accident, illness, or an injury. Because they had no control, they may believe they were inadequate, incompetent, and powerless, and then they begin to feel helpless. Hopelessness is a feeling, and helplessness is the non-action coming from that feeling. Helplessness and hopelessness may cause you to feel stuck, uncertain, and paralyzed. In this lesson,we will explore helplessness and hopelessness, and ways to overcome them and their resulting behaviors.
